Introduction

Crime Stoppers is a telephone hotline for members of the community to provide anonymous information about criminal activity. This information is electronically sent to the police establishment nearest to where the crime is occurring for investigation.

  • You, the caller need not give your name. Remaining anonymous allows you to overcome any fear of involvement or retaliation.
  • Your call is not recorded or taped. You are not identified in any way.
  • Callers are allocated a code number:
    • To provide further information
    • To check on the progress of the investigation
    • To collect a reward (if an offender is convicted)

The Crime Stoppers Police Unit is staffed with police officers 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Your call will be answered by a Police Officer who is trained to assist you.  The Police Officers staff the calls as part of our major partnership with the Queensland Police Service.

If you need police to attend an address or you need immediate police assistance DO NOT PHONE CRIME STOPPERS

Phone Police Communications: 3364 3555 (Brisbane Metropolitan Area) or in an emergency call 000 (triple zero)

What Crime Stoppers does...

Receives anonymous information about crime and allocates it to the most appropriate police group to respond to it.

Provides feedback on investigations to callers who can quote their code number.  No code - no information.

What Crime Stoppers does not do...

  • Does not provide legal advice;
  • Does not provide feedback to persons other than the original caller;
  • Does not investigate matters reported to them;
  • Does not accept calls from people who are abusive or intoxicated;
  • Does not take reports from members of the public for 'over-the-counter' matters normally dealt with at police stations.

What kind of information should callers provide?

  • Any information about criminal activity either current or in the past;
  • To be effectively investigated, this information should include things like:
    • the names, address and vehicle registrations of offenders?
    • details of the crime - date, time place?
    • where did they get their information, how they know their information is true?
    • are there any vicious dogs / any firearms / weapons etc?
    • Where is the property / drugs hidden?
    • How many people live at the residence?
    • Do they work - if so - Where? When?

It is not expected that callers put themselves at risk to obtain such details, but information which does not give police any facts - a person's name, address or vehicle registration - is of limited use.

It is important to remember that the information provided may lead to the accused person being taken into custody or their homes searched by the police. These are serious matters and obviously police need to make sure they can validate as much of the information as possible. Whilst the arrest of offenders is a pleasing result, the supply of intelligence data for dissemination is of equal value.

When should you contact CRIME STOPPERS?

• If you have information relating to a crime which has been committed;
• if you suspect that a crime is being planned; or
• to report an address where drug production and/or distribution may be taking place.

If you wish to report a crime in progress or you require emergency assistance, you should dial the
Australian Emergency Number 000 (triple zero).

How does the call centre work?

Trained operators receive your call and take note of the details provided. Information is forwarded to the most relevant section of the Queensland Police Service for attention and investigation. All details are important, however, caller identity is not required. Your anonymity is the key feature of the system.

Can your contact with Crime Stoppers be traced?

No. Our telephone equipment and website is designed specifically not to reveal the caller telephone number or Internet IP address. Your anonymity is assured.

Can you find out if your information has proven helpful?

Yes. If you provide information via the telephone hotline or website, you are given a code number during the initial call or at the end of submitting your online information. Callers can make a second call to 1800 333 000 up to 12 months later, quoting the original code number, in order to be advised of the result of the information provided.

Website users may re-enter their code number on the home page of the website to view the result of their information.

Your Anonymity is the key feature of our system

Will you receive a reward for your information?

Yes. If the information you provide leads to the arrest of the offender/s, then you may be eligible to receive a reward of up to $1000, depending on the seriousness of the crime solved. This is paid on an anonymous basis if you maintain contact with Crime Stoppers, providing the original code number only.

What are the benefits of providing information anonymously?

Information providers gain personal satisfaction in helping to protect their community by contributing to law and order and public safety. A community which is active in protecting itself may also deter would-be offenders.

Is CRIME STOPPERS successful?

Yes. Since 1989, in Queensland there have been more than 460,000 calls, leading to over 16,200 arrests and more than 43,200 charges. Drugs worth over $557 million have been seized and more than $8.9 million worth of stolen property recovered.
